A is definitely going through a daddy phase. He is basically the coolest thing since Dora fruit snacks and he always gets the royal treatment. Like, when he comes home from work, there’s a running-start attack to greet him, followed by hugs, kisses, squeals of joy and general ohmygoddaddyshome-isms.
And then there’s me. When I come home from work on Wednesdays after they’ve been busy doing super fun things all day, I barely get eye contact. I have to practically tackle her for her to notice I’m home. Well, she notices I suppose. But definitely hardly cares. {sigh}
So when R was leaving Thursday for a long weekend of golf, I was a little worried about our girls-only weekend. Three-and-a-half days of full-on mother/daughter time. 84 hours of possible “I want my daddy” whining. 5,040 minutes of potential “Mommy, I’m miserable” moments.
Luckily, we ended up having an awesome weekend. I worked Friday and she went to school, so it was a pretty normal day. We did our usual Friday night hang out of watching Dora and making dinner.
Saturday, we went to check out the new Home Goods near us. It was like being called to the mother ship. Mmmm, pillows. And lamps. And duvets! And frames! Yep, as usual, I about short-circuited. Too.much.home.decor.excitement! So I only ended up with a new blanket for the bed and a Halloween costume for A. Which she wore all.freaking.weekend. Of course, she wanted to nap in it, but I was pretty sure she’d strangle herself, so that was a no go. Lucky for me that didn’t result in any major meltdowns. I just had to promise she could wear it immediately once she woke up. I did manage to wrestle it off her once more for an excursion to Kohls, but it was just short of a minor miracle that she didn’t end up making any preemptive Halloween appearances around town this weekend.
After her nap we started on her homework. Yes, the 3-year-old had her very first homework assignment. Cute and disturbing at the same time. (I use the term “homework” lightly.)
Then it was time for more serious work: Baking. Yummmm. It’s quite possible that I ate 5 of these pumpkin chocolate chip muffins after they came out of the oven. But I will neither confirm nor deny.
Finally, after bathtime it was movie night. A actually decided against watching “The Little Mermaid” for the 900th time, and instead chose “Snow Buddies.” Thank you, dear child. And then Sunday, we visited with family, did a little cleaning, and that was about it.
I’m still shocked that the weekend was so uneventful. Even Friday morning when I had to wake her up uber early to take her to school (usually she gets to sleep in since R takes her, but Friday we had to be out the door by 6:50), she was a peach. Very un-Avery-like. Throughout the weekend I even got a few “You’re so silly, mommy”s and even a “I love holding your hand” as we made our way through the store parking lot on our errands. And just as I started thinking that maybe the whole daddy phase was over, this was his conversation with her this morning:
A (as R walked into her room): “I missed you daddy! How was golfing?”
R: “Great! I even won a trophy.”
A: “Yay! Very good job, daddy.”
{sigh}
